Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said the government has ordered the immediate sealing of buildings with unauthorised fifth floors in the city as municipal officials step up efforts to conduct fresh surveys to identify “dangerous” and “dilapidated” buildings.

The MCD’s North West Zone on Monday issued an order directing officials to take immediate action under the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act against such buildings, and assistant engineers have been asked to carry out regular field inspections and ensure compliance with the directions.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has suspended five officials, including a deputy commissioner and four engineering officials, following the building collapse in Satya Niketan where seven people died, and the owner of the building has been arrested, officials said on Monday.

The chief minister said the Delhi government was treating the matter seriously and that police have taken the owner of the collapsed building into custody and legal proceedings are underway.

“Immediate sealing of buildings with unauthorised fifth floors has been ordered across Delhi,” Gupta said in a post on X.
