Delhi pollution debate turns ugly as BJP- AAP clash erupts in MCD House

A discussion on tackling Delhi’s worsening air pollution in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House on Thursday turned into a chaotic scene, with BJP and AAP councillors engaging in heated arguments, slogan shouting and allegations of misconduct, NDTV reported.

The proceedings witnessed clashes between ruling BJP members and the Opposition AAP, while Congress councillors also joined the heated exchanges. The situation escalated to the point where marshals had to intervene and escort Mayor Pravesh Wahi to safety.

According to the NDTV report, the trouble started after AAP councillors demanded the immediate release of development funds for their wards.

In response, Mayor Wahi announced that Rs 25 lakh would be released as development funds and said councillors would receive a total allocation of Rs 2 crore during the current financial year.

However, the announcement failed to satisfy the Opposition. AAP councillors demanded that the immediate allocation be increased to Rs 1 crore, leading to loud protests inside the House.

As slogans intensified, several AAP councillors moved towards the mayor’s chair, forcing the proceedings to be adjourned for five minutes, the report added.
