Heavy rain lashed parts of Delhi on Friday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert, which was later upgraded to an orange alert as weather conditions intensified.
The IMD said moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning is likely to continue across Delhi and the NCR region. The sudden spell brought temporary relief from soaring temperature, even as atmospheric instability was expected to be short-lived.
Despite the rainfall, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C during the day, about 4.2 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 24°C.
The IMD has indicated that there will be no significant change in maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours, followed by a rise of around 2°C in the subsequent day. Thereafter, temperatures are expected to remain largely stable but above normal levels over the next week.
While the rain brought brief respite and led to gusty conditions in several areas, the overall trend suggests that heat will continue to dominate in the coming days.
