Delhi University student’s body found in Yamuna, 6 days after disappearance

Sneha Debnath, a 19-year-old student from Tripura who had been missing in Delhi for six days, was found dead on Sunday, police said.

Sneha, a second-year B.Sc. Mathematics student at Delhi University’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, lived with her family in the Paryavaran Complex area of Delhi. She had gone missing on July 7.

Her body was recovered from the Yamuna near the Geeta Colony area in east Delhi. According to a note shared by her family, Sneha intended to jump from Signature Bridge, where her cab driver said he had dropped her off.

Due to poor CCTV coverage in the area, police have not been able to trace Sneha’s movements after she exited the cab.

According to a missing person’s complaint lodged by her elder sister, Bipasha Debnath, Sneha had told their mother, Pinki Debnath, on the morning of July 7 that she was going to drop her friend Pitunia at Sarai Rohilla Railway Station in central Delhi.

Bipasha said Sneha had hired a cab driven by Subhe Chandra and left home around 5:15 a.m.

“When we tried calling her around 8:45 a.m., her phone was switched off,” Bipasha said in the complaint. “When I contacted Pitunia, she told me that she never met Sneha. I then took the cab driver’s number from Pitunia and called him. He said he had dropped Sneha at Signature Bridge in Wazirabad.”
