External affairs minister S. Jaishankar spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha on Thursday, a day after the embassy of that country said India had not responded to its request for a phone conversation between the two.

The conversation took place at a time when commercial vessels crewed by Indians have come under attack from both Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea over the past fortnight, killing five seafarers from India.

There was no official word from either Ukraine or India on the fate of the 13 Indians stranded aboard MV Amir1 in the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said: “Glad to connect again with FM @andrii_sybiha of Ukraine, after our respective travels. Discussed attacks on commercial shipping and Indian seafarers in the Black Sea. Such attacks by any party are absolutely unacceptable and India condemns them unequivocally.”

India has over the past fortnight summoned the mission heads of both countries to protest the attacks.
