World Cup: Messi, Enzo score to cap off historic 3-2 comeback

Enzo Fernandez scored in stoppage time to give Argentina an incredible 3-2 win over Egypt and a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday (July 6, 2026).

The defending champions had trailed 2-0 after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and and Mostafa Zico at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But Argentina got two late goals in four minutes from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi to get back in the game.

Messi also missed a chance in the first half when his penalty was saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.

The win over Egypt seals Argentina’s passage into the quarterfinals. The world champion will face Colombia or Switzerland in the next stage, which will be decided in the final Round of 16 clash later tonight.

Argentina serves up another World Cup classic, just after their win over Cabo Verde. Lionel Messi is in tears, but tears of joy. Down 2-0 and heading for the exit, Argentina three goals in 14 minutes to script a comeback for the ages. Egypt looked excellent on the counter and repeatedly punished Argentina’s mistakes, but Argentina came clutch yet again and now progress to the quarterfinals.
