MoD Rajnath Singh Pushes For deeper defence ties with Germany

India on Tuesday called for a stronger defence industrial partnership with Germany, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urging German lawmakers and industry leaders to collaborate on co-creation, co-development and co-innovation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Addressing members of the German Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence and Security in Berlin, Singh noted that evolving security challenges and rapid technological shifts have made the global landscape increasingly complex. He stressed the need for coordinated responses, trusted partnerships and greater adaptability among like-minded nations.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, Singh said India’s defence sector is witnessing a major transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He pointed out that collaboration with Germany’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem—including its renowned Mittelstand firms—could unlock significant mutual benefits.

The Defence Minister also underlined the growing strategic convergence between India and Germany, both bilaterally and within the broader European framework. He referred to support from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and increasing momentum within the European Union for deeper engagement with India. As two major democracies with resilient economies, Singh said, both countries have a shared responsibility in shaping global discourse.

Addressing geopolitical concerns, Singh warned that instability in West Asia—particularly disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—poses direct risks to India’s energy and economic security.
