Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be skipping the
United Nations General Assembly scheduled for this week. As per government sources,
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be representing India at UNGA 78 in New York
City
78th General Assembly is scheduled to begin on September 19, 2023. Brazil
will be the traditional first speaker at UNGA 78, followed by the United States.
Earlier on, India’s “Head of Government” was scheduled to address the session on
September 22, 2023. However, this stands cancelled.
Earlier this year, during his state visit to the United States, PM Modi led a yoga session at
the UN Headquarters to mark the occasion of International Yoga Day on June 21, 2023.
The PM-Modi-led yoga session also proceeded to create history. The Indian prime minister
created a new Guiness World Record for “participation of people of most nationalities in a
yoga event.”
As per reports, the theme of this year’s general debate is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting
global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development
Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all”.
Along with the general debate, a series of bilateral discussions will also take place on the
sidelines of UNGA 78. At the 78th General Assembly, the issues of climate change and
action, and the Russia-Ukraine war are expected to be discussed.
