Morocco earthquake leaves more than 2,000 dead

Over 2,000 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountains late Friday night, destroying buildings and leaving people homeless and struggling to find food and water. The World Health Organisation said more than 3 lakh people were affected in Marrakech and surrounding areas, Reuters reported. An aftershock of 3.9 magnitude rattled the country on Sunday.

Moroccan media reported that the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech, one of the city’s most famed landmarks, suffered damage, but the extent was not immediately clear, Reuters reported. Its 69-meter (226-foot) minaret is known as the “roof of Marrakech.” Widespread damage was also reported in the old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Meanwhile, there is no report till now of any Indian national getting affected due to the earthquake in the country, the Embassy of India has said, advising all its citizens in the country to stay calm and adhere to guidelines issued by the local authorities
