PM Modi hitches a ride with students in Metro enroute DU centenary celebrations, says DU is not just a university but a movement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a ride in Delhi Metro to reach the valedictory ceremony of DU centenary celebrations. Amid tight security preparations, PM Modi swiped his card at a metro station and boarded the train.

The Prime Minister can also be seen interacting with his fellow passengers while on his way to the Delhi University centenary celebrations.

In a tweet on Thursday, PM Modi informed that he will be attending the DU centenary celebrations and lauded the central university as a ‘premier centre of learning’. He wrote, “Looking forward to joining the University of Delhi’s centenary celebrations at 11 AM tomorrow, 30th June. As a premier centre of learning, DU has been nurturing talent and fostering intellectual growth for a century. Congratulations to the DU fraternity on this milestone.”

A three-tier security arrangement involving more than 1,000 paramilitary and police personnel have been deployed in view of PM Modi’s visit to the DU event, news agency PTI quoted police officials as saying.

PM Modi is the chief guest at the closing day of Delhi University’s centenary celebrations while Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is the guest of honour.

Reportedly, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of three buildings and release a set of coffee table books. The three buildings will be used for the faculty of technology, computer centre and academic block.

DU has announced starting its B Tech course from the upcoming academic session and the new faculty of technology building will be used for that purpose.

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit to Delhi University, some colleges have issued a set of guidelines including compulsory attendance for students and teachers, no black dresses and suspension of classes between 10 am to 12 noon.

However, Delhi University Registrar Vikas Gupta confirmed to PTI that attendance has not been made compulsory for the event. He said, “We have informed the colleges that we are doing a live telecast of the event as all students cannot attend it. The colleges have made the arrangements. We have not made attendance mandatory,”
