A sudden spell of dust storm, gusty winds and rain swept across Delhi on Wednesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the rising temperature.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issue an orange alert for the national capital. It warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, across several parts of the city. The alert was shared with the State Disaster Management Authorities, covering all districts of Delhi.
Weather stations recorded intense wind activity, with Pragati Maidan witnessing the highest gust at 68 kmph, followed by Pusa at 65 kmph. Wind speeds reached 50 kmph in Palam, 46 kmph at Lodi Road, 44 kmph at IGNOU, 41 kmph in Naraina and 33 kmph in Pitampura, reflecting widespread impact across the Capital.
Rainfall was also recorded in multiple areas, with Janakpuri receiving 10.5 mm, CRPF Campus 11.5 mm and Naraina and Pusa around 8 mm each, as per the IMD data till 8 pm.
High-velocity winds led to power outages and disruptions in several areas. The authorities advised residents to remain indoors, avoid weak structures and stay away from electric poles and overhead wires.
