At 13,700 ft near China border, India’s highest airfield gets operational

In a major boost to India’s national security and border connectivity, the country’s highest airfield at Mudh-Nyoma in eastern Ladakh has become fully operational.

Located at an altitude of around 13,700 feet, the Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) is now ready for full-scale operations, making it India’s closest airfield to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The newly developed 3-kilometre runway at Nyoma will enable rapid mobilisation of defence forces and strengthen India’s strategic capabilities along the northern frontier. The project, sanctioned in 2021 with a budget of approximately Rs 214 crore, has been designed to support emergency operations and heavy aircraft movement in extreme high-altitude conditions.

Nyoma’s elevation and proximity to the LAC make it a vital strategic asset, allowing the Indian Air Force to deploy troops, equipment, and supplies to remote border regions faster than before.
