Protesting farmers, undeterred by clashes with police at the Punjab-Haryana border, resumed their march toward Delhi on Wednesday after declaring an overnight “ceasefire” following a tumultuous day marked by tear gas, water cannons, and clashes with police.
Sources have told India Today TV that a group of protesting farmers are likely to meet a team of three Union ministers on Thursday. The Centre invited the farmer leaders for holding third round of talks in a week.
Hundreds of tractor trolleys were seen lined up at Shambhu on the Punjab-Haryana border as farmers continued their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, despite a huge security deployment, concrete barricading and dug-up roads to impede their advance. Police personnel again resorted to firing tear gas at the protesters on Wednesday to deter them from approaching the barricades.
In Delhi and its satellite towns, expressways turned into crawlways for the second straight day as traffic restrictions and heavy police barricading paralysed the movement of vehicles. As farmers get closer to the capital on Wednesday, cops are likely to step up security measures at the borders, making it all the more difficult for commuters.
Echoes of the 2020-21 protests reverberated as thousands of farmers, primarily from Punjab, encountered a heavy police presence as they attempted to breach barricades en route to Delhi. The Haryana Police, determined to prevent their entry into the state, employed various measures, including , water cannons, and concrete barriers.
