People should not be afraid to come to courts: CJI DY Chandrachud

People should not be afraid to approach courts, emphasized Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Sunday while speaking on the occasion of Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court of India.

The CJI expressed his hope that approaching the courts is viewed by people as a fair mechanism and not a last resort.

“Individuals should not be afraid of going to court or see it as a last resort. We hope it is viewed as a fair mechanism to rely on. Sometimes, as a society we may frown upon the judicial institutions, (but) our courts ensure that agreements are reached upon by relying on a solid institution,” he said.

The Chief Justice also highlighted the diverse cases that come before the Supreme Court, representing the public’s aspirations for essentials such as clean air and water.
