At least one person died and around 40 were injured on Sunday after multiple explosions rocked a convention centre in the Kalamassery area of Kerala’s Kochi during a prayer meeting of a Christian group.
Three blasts were reported minutes after the prayer meeting started. Police said the cause of the blast has not been established yet.
Visuals from inside the convention centre showed multiple fires as children screamed in fear and people rushed outside. Some people were also seen trying to bring the fire under control as multiple chairs went up in flames.
Police said they received a call at around 9 am informing them about the blast and seeking help.
Both police and fire rescue teams rushed to the spot as hundreds of people gathered outside the convention centre following the blasts.
Among the injured, as many as 10 people have suffered more than 50 per cent burns, including a 10-year-old child whose condition is serious, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said. Seven people are in the ICU at the Kalamassery Medical College.
“We might not have a major increase in the number of injured people, but yes, it might reach up to 50,” George added.
