Flyovers, subways on roads connecting to IGI Airport to get a ‘G20 makeover’

Prominent flyovers such as Safdarjung, Bhikaji Cama Place, Nauroji Nagar and South Extension along with subways, foot over bridges and other inner roads connecting to the IGI airport are soon going to get a makeover with theme-based paintings and street art showcasing the culture, classical dance forms, yoga asanas and tourists spots of India as the city gears up to host the G20 Summit later this year.

The Ring Road between the airport and Ashram has around six flyovers and is one of the key stretches that connects South Delhi to South East, Lutyens Zone, Central and West Delhi.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to repair and beautify these flyovers with paintings on the sidewalls and railings, along with the surface under these structures in some areas. The department will also illuminate the flyovers with Tricolour and multi-coloured lights and put up seasonal flowers to catch the attention of commuters, especially foreign delegates, likely to use this stretch during the Summit, said officials.

The stretch also includes monuments like Safdarjung Tomb, Humayun Tomb, Neela Gumbad and Lodhi Garden.

The PWD will also repair and beautify inner roads from Dhaula Kuan to AIIMS, said officials. “Key aim is to make these stretches beautiful and show the culture and tradition of the country,” said an official.

Around three FOBs at Ullan Bater road, Dhaula Kuan and Jharera Village along with subways at Bhikaji Cama Place, Nauroji Nagar and Safdarjung Hospital will be covered.

Officials said tenders for the project have been floated and the estimated cost is nearly Rs 5 crore. “It will take about a month for the tendering process; after that, the work will start,” said an official
